31 AUGUST–6 SEPTEMBER 2026 · MARKETING · SALES · CUSTOMER SERVICE

ChatGPT became a search engine. Your dashboard missed the memo.

Most AI developments will not change how your team works. These six might—from how customers discover you to what your agents remember, supervise and are allowed to approve.

Hello, fellow laundry inspectors.

Last week produced a lot of AI action. We ignored most of it.

The six developments that survived the wash share one quality: each could change a real decision, workflow or responsibility inside marketing, sales or customer service.

This week, AI did not wait for another transformation workshop. It entered the revenue stack through legal categories, platform migrations, persistent memory and approval rules.

The interesting question is no longer whether a team has adopted AI. It is whether the team noticed which assumptions, settings and authority changed underneath it—and whether anybody is measuring the result.

Check the pockets. The defaults have been busy.

ChatGPT became a search engine. Your dashboard missed the memo.

ChatGPT did not add ten blue links. Brussels called it a search engine anyway.

On 31 August, the European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act. The trigger was scale: OpenAI declared at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU.

Conversational answers became infrastructure before the measurement layer caught up.

What the label changes

By January 2027, ChatGPT will face additional obligations around systemic-risk assessment and mitigation. That is a legal development, not proof that answer-engine optimisation works. But it settles one useful strategic question: conversational systems belong inside the discovery stack, not beside it as an experiment.

MARKETING

Track when and how the brand appears in answers, then connect citations to qualified traffic and assisted conversion.

SALES

Ask which sources buyers are likely to encounter before a conversation—and whether your evidence is legible to answer engines.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Treat recurring customer questions as discoverability research. The best answer may need to exist before the ticket does.

Do not rename SEO after one screenshot

A recent preregistered experiment found that AI search interfaces can reduce publisher clicks and trust. It studied Google, not ChatGPT, and it tells us nothing about commercial intent. So keep three measures separate: visibility, qualified visits and influenced revenue.

WEAK REPORT

“We appeared in seven AI answers this month.”

STRONGER QUESTION

Which cited answer moved a buyer into a useful next step?
